Letters from Our Soldiers

From every one of my Joes, thanks from the mountain sand!  If you could only see what it is like, but there is a TV in our hangar area where the mail list is posted up daily and our Soldiers stand right under it when they come on to shift to see if a package from home has arrived for them.  It's almost like a small Christmas each time, so to get gifts from strangers will be really special to many of them.  Thank you!

SFC Webber, Afghanistan (Fort Campbell)

I just want to say thank you so very much for taking the time to adopt me. It brings a smile to my face knowing we still have the support of people back in the states and that all our hard work and dedication is not going unnoticed.  God bless you and God bless America.

With much Appreciation,

SGT Tennery, Afghanistan (Fort Bliss)

I want to thank you in advance for adopting me.  Just knowing that there is someone out there who supports our cause is heartwarming enough.  As a soldier, when we see our name on the mail list and know it's a care package, the feeling is unexplainable.  Things we can normally go to the store and buy at home are not here, so when it comes in we cherish it very much.  The PX here has very few items, and as soon as they come in they are gone just as quick.  So whomever receives this, I would like to thank you in advance for your time and support.
... SPC Arvie, 10th Sustainment Brigade, Afghanistan (Louisiana National Guards)

I really appreciate the sponsors who take the time to adopt a soldier and go out of their way to send 'gifts' to soldiers who are away from home.  Thank you for supporting us and helping us make overseas deployments that much more content and easier to adapt to this lifestyle.  I appreciate you!
... PFC Samante, 69th Brigade, Kuwait (Fort Hood)

We could not do our job if we did not have the amazing support from home.  God Bless America!
... PFC Bitz, 1-21 FA, Afghanistan (Fort Hood)

Thank you for all of your support!  You are all the real heroes!
... SPC Cavanaugh, 1-2 IN Battalion, Afghanistan (Grafenwoehr, Germany)

I would like to thank those who support the troops. Every package that is received brings great morale to the soldiers fighting on the front lines.
... SGT Trawick, 749th OD Co., Afghanistan (Fort Carson)

Deployment is a tough time and something as small as a package or card is as good as gold when you don't have much.  My fellow comrads and I appreciate what you are doing for us.
... PFC Johnson, Afghanistan (170th Infantry BCT, Baumholder, Germany)

Our soldiers oftentimes work 18-hour days in the grueling heat here in our remote outpost. Mail and care packages are often sporadic. Mail has always been cherished by soldiers in a war zone for as long as there has been the written word. It’s hard to describe what it’s like when those magical words of, “Hey, the mail is in!” is excitedly passed from soldier to soldier.  I am very grateful to you and your supporters for the work you do with my military brothers & sisters. It is because of fellow Americans such as you that make us proud to serve for you.
... SFC Brown, Afghanistan (101st Airborne)

I really do appreciate everything ya'll do for us, and I know my battle buddies all feel the same way.

... SGT Williams, Afghanistan (1775th MP CO, Michigan ARNG)

Thank you to the families that do all these great amazing things for us, and giving us morale boosts when they are extremely needed. Thank you for supporting us in the things we do.
... SPC Flores, Afghanistan (1-32, Fort Drum)

It's a great feeling to receive mail once and a while with goodies. It's even more of a blessing to know we have people back home supporting us and caring for us.
... SPC Aroca, Afghanistan (443 MP Co.)

The Soldiers are really appreciative to what you guys are doing. It helps out a lot. It makes personal sacrifice that much more easy for the great people of our country.
... SFC Copper, Afghanistan (63rd Signal Co.)

I thank you for taking the time to adopt me.  I really appreciate this from the bottom of my heart.
... PFC Miser, Iraq (Fort Hood)

Mail is really important here.  It gives us something to look forward to.  It's really nice to know that people care.
... PFC Nash, Afghanistan (10th Mtn. Div.)

First, I want to say thanks for the great support that your organization has given to the Soldiers as we deploy and serve the People of the United States.  In this time of hardship, it's good to know that we have the support of America.  So I thank you all from my heart.  Be blessed.  Army Strong!
... MSG Gayle, Afghanistan (101 TAC 1, Fort Benning)

I appreciate your support and am proud to know America has our backs out here.
... Spc. "Doc" Badillo, Afghanistan (10th Mtn. Div.)

... Lt. Fulton, Afghanistan (10th Mtn. Div.)

Thank you for the love and support you have shown us over the years.  It is greatly appreciated.
... SGT Hodge, Iraq

I just wanna say to the volunteers that put all this time and effort into adopting a soldier, it really means a lot.
... Cpl. Barger, Iraq

Anything you send will be greatly appreciated.  Most of the items received will be given to my soldiers, especially the ones that have little to no family back home or with low income families that can't send care packages.  Thank you.
... SGT Moncada

As a single soldier, it means a lot to receive mail.  It may seem trivial to others, but while deployed it really helps a lot.  Thank you for having the Adopt-A-Soldier program.
... SSG Gilliam, Afghanistan (401st AFSB)

Thank you for all the time and, most importantly, love and appreciation you have put into your Adopt-A-Soldier program for soldiers such as myself.  You are truly angels from above.

It is such a blessing to be in your Adopt-A-Soldier program! Thank you so much for your support
...PFC Wilson, Afghanistan (159CAB)

Thank you so much for your wonderful program.  I have received a care box and it warms my heart that total strangers 4,000 miles away care about Soldiers and our country.
... SFC Olson, Afghanistan (863 EN BN)

I really appreciate all the support for our military.  it's hard being separated from my family, but wonderful to know how many out there truly care.  Thank you for what you are doing.
... SPC Beck, Afghanistan (Vilseck, Germany)

I've got a great group of guys (and girl) I work with.  I actually call them my kids, even though we're really equal in what we do.  I'm on my 3rd deployment and know how much a letter here and there, or simple thing like your favorite "hard to find" toothpaste, can mean to someone.  I'm pretty good at surviving on the basics, it's just good to keep in touch with the free world.
... SPC Romain, Iraq (Fort Riley)

I just want to thank all of the people supporting us, while down range, it is well appreciated.  Your continued support keeps us going and makes us know that you care.  My whole unit really appreciates this so much.
... SPC Mara, Kuwait (164th Trans BN)

I'm a platoon leader for about 75 soldiers.  We provide maintenance for the helicopters.  I realize it is a large group, but anything you can send we will truly appreciate.
... 1LT Foley, Afghanistan (Fort Campbell)

I'm on my 2nd deployment.  It doesn't make it easy being away from family, but I'm proud to serve my country when they feel they need me.
... SPC Lee, Iraq (Fort Stewart)

THANK YOU!!!  This is my first deployment and I have heard GREAT things about your program.  I will definately continue to encourage my soldiers to sign up. I am a career military officer so I will have many more deployments and will always share the support you offer soldiers.  THANK YOU again.
... 1LT Merwin, Afghanistan (6-101, Fort Campbell)

I will be happy with whatever your heart sends.
... SSG McCoy, Iraq (Fort Riley)

... SFC Atkinson, Afghanistan (Fort Campbell)

I would like to thank you for all your support.  This means A LOT to me and this is truly a blessing.  It's very dusty and dirty.  We have no toilets, just port-a-potties and are currently living in a 50 person tent.  I do not want to ask for much.  Whatever I receive is greatly appreciated.  Again, thank you for your support and time.

... PFC Darden, Iraq (Fort Drum)

Please help.  I am a lonely soldier with no family support.
... Iraq

I am a medic and I love what I do.  I frequently go out into orphanages and little villages where small children always come out to say hello.  If you would like, you can send me things that I can distribute to them such as candy and little toys.  Thanks for all of your support!  It truly does go a long, long way.

... FRSA, Special Forces

We just returned from welcoming our "single" soldier son back from Afghanistan with the 101st at Ft. Campbell.  We were so surprised and so thankful that someone had been so thoughtful to stock his room with food and necessary items!  We are a military family and I realize now (with a single son - soldier) that it is very different for them returning with no home set up to move right back into - as it is for married soldiers!  Your kindness was deeply appreciated - seeing someone reach out and make our son's  homecoming special meant a lot to this mom!

A thankful mom!
Dee Hann

My name is Justin Mazzullo and I want to thank you for all you do!  It really means a lot to us.

I am a Sand Sailor deployed to Iraq right now and we just received a lot of Girl Scout cookies.  I wanted to drop you a line and say thank you.  Most of the cookies are not good for my diet, but I can't resist them.  Thanks again for all the support.
... Joshua, U.S. Navy

Thank you for the neck wraps.  We have distributed them to the Soldiers as they come into our clinic.  I want to thank you and the volunteers of Hugs for Our Soldiers that support the servicemen serving overseas.  It is reassuring to know that people in the US support the Soldiers, Airmen, Sailors and Marines.

I just wanted to take a minute out of my day to thank you.  We truly appreciate the time, care, and concern that great Americans like you and your organization give for our deployed Soldiers here in Iraq. This is my third tour over here and the American people are giving more and more to our deployed troops every year.  It could be very easy to forget about the troops that are in Iraq today, yet through caring organizations like Hugs for Our Soldiers we know that there are many people back home that think about us everyday.
Again, please give a special thanks to every one of the members of your organization and let them know that we truly appreciate the time, effort and care that you all put into supporting America's greatest treasure, our sons and daughters defending our great nation.

... Maj. Brown

... SSG Adams

It's organizations like you that can really make a difference to us deployed soldiers.  Thanks for your support.
... SPC Lund

I want to thank you and the entire Hugs for Our Soldiers organization for the welcome home "hugs" you gave the returning Soldiers of Strike Brigade.  It was an outstanding way to personally convey to each of them the tremendous support our Soldiers receive both from your organization and the American people.
... Col. Hickman

A lot of folks who live in the barracks come back in need of some of the very things you guys provide.  We lose our washcloths or have to throw our towels away, or our shampoo explodes on the plane.  You wouldn't believe how nice it is to have a replacement available when we get home.  It doesn't just make us feel more comfortable.  It really does make us feel loved, just like a hug.  So thanks for the hug.  I hope you guys can keep them coming as long as folks are still coming home!
... SGT Powell

Thank you so much for the snacks and toiletries that you provided our unit with to make our barracks space more comfortable.  It was a really nice touch.  Approximately 20 of us from my unit live in the barracks and benefited from your gifts.  Thanks for all that you have done for us and all other troops.
... SPC Weaver

I want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart.  You can never imagine what this means to me.  We all really appreciated the packages that you sent to us.  They were truly a blessing.  We want to thank Hugs for Our Soldiers for all the kindness you have shown us.  It was an extremely hard time to be away from our families during the holidays.  Your care packages did a lot to lift our spirits and to let us know that there are people back home who care about us.  It is so easy to forget that anyone even thinks of us when we are so far from home.  I pray that God will bless each one of you for the hard work that you do for us.
... TSGT Young, 134th ARW (Air Force)

Thank you so much on behalf of the entire Vehicle Management Flight (several dozen of us) for your heartfelt "hugs".  We have been here since last summer and knew we were going to miss the holidays back in the states and would not be having a "Tennessee Christmas" this year.  Getting something from back home was a real treat.  Enjoy the rest of your holidays in the knowledge that you have made ours a bit merrier!
... MSGT Ladue, 134th ARW (Air Force)

I want to thank you and the entire Hugs organization for the welcome "hugs" you gave the returning Soldiers of Strike Brigade.  It was an outstanding way to personally convey to each of them the tremendous support our Soldiers receive both from your organization and the American people.  The travel, hard work and long hours you put into asking for and receiving donations from all over the United States to put together over 1500 bags for our single soldiers does not go unnoticed.  Their lives were enriched knowing that someone cares about them, their safe return and the sacrifices they endured while deployed.  For the Soldiers to walk into their barracks room to see a clean towel, toiletries and the goodies in the bag gave them a tangible, physical expression that someone did indeed care for them and wanted to welcome them home on the day of their return as well.  Thank you for your generous and sincere caring for our Soldiers.

STRIKE!
Colonel William B. Hickman, Commanding
2nd Brigade Combat Team
502nd Infantry Regiment
101st Airborne Division (AIR ASSAULT)

I want to express my heartfelt thanks for supporting my husband and his fellow soldiers from the 3rd Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division. My husband, received a wonderful package from you. I know you are well aware how much boxes from home mean when one is far from home. So, thank you for all that you do. You helped them in getting through this long deployment. Thank you and best wishes.
Wife of a 1-15 IN Soldier

Thank you and your Tennessee Family for thinking of me and all of our troops for so many years.  God Bless you!
... SSG Thomas Wanch

Thank you for helping with the Hugs program. The basket of goodies that was waiting for me when I got to my barracks was much appreciated.

... Soldier with 3-1CAV Fort Benning

I received your care package after I returned from Iraq. I wanted to say thank you. As it was, we came in late and the hygiene products came in hand and meant one less stop we had to make. Once again, thank you. It was a big help.

...PFC Paris, Fort Benning, GA

When we thought no one cared you guys proved us wrong. Thank you for supporting us!

When I got home after a 14 hr flight, which I could not sleep on, I was completely exhausted. Before the flight, we also were on 24 hr standby at the terminal in Kuwait. Anyways, when I got to the barracks, all I thought I had to look forward to was a naked mattress and an empty stomach. So I thought. Because of support like what you and others like you provided, me and all of my battle buddies had sheets, blankets, food and hygiene products to wash off the flight and the Iraq dust that only finally came off here in the states. Thank you for REAL support and not just lip service. HOOAH!
- PFC Almendarez

Thank you and all of the children who created the wonderful welcome home signs and food bags for our troops returning from Iraq. I am a mother of one of them and it really touched my heart. I'm so grateful you and the children have taken the time to think of our US soldiers. I brought my son's welcome home signs home and will save them for him in a scrapbook I hope to put together for him so he may show his children one day. Thank you again for everything you are doing for our servicemen and women! They really appreciated it.

... Janis Mehall Mother of BSTB Soldier Fort Benning, GA

I just wanted to send you this little to note to thank you for the box of cookies that you sent. I really appreciate all that you and Hugs for Soldiers are doing for all of our deployed service members. The cookies were a HUGE!!! hit. I can’t quite understand it, but these guys out here really go crazy fighting over Girl Scout cookies. It is really quite funny to watch. They were offering to buy them from me and were trying to make all kinds of weird bargains for some cookies. I kept one box and shared all the rest. Needless to say, Hugs for Soldiers brightened the faces of many people that day. I really don’t know what else to say but Thank you and please keep up the good work.

Very respectfully,

FC2 (SW) Justin P. Shoemaker

USS Philippine Sea CG-58

We the Soldiers here in Iraq want to extend our gratitude for you and the girls scouts for supporting what we do over here and for what we do for Americans. People like you make this mission here in Iraq worth fighting, and the Soldiers appreciate all the support from great Americans like yourself and others like you. I have attached photos of our Soldiers with the cookies, and I hope the girls get to see them. Again, thank you for your support.

"On behalf of the Soldiers assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, I would like to send my sincerest, heartfelt thanks for the support shown by your organization. The packages and letters we received from your organization during the holiday season lifted our spirits and reminded us that there are wonderful people such as you back home supporting us. It further enhanced our morale as we continue to meet our purpose in the Global War on Terrorism. There are many days here when the men are called upon to accomplish tasks that place them well in harm's way. To receive packages from the home front is a reminder that they are loved and missed back at home."

I distributed the Christmas packages you sent. Please tell everyone that we really appreciate everything they are doing. Packages and cards are simple things to folks back home, but there's always a little smile inside when you get mail here. We are truly blessed to have friends like y'all .... Maj. Price, 101st Airborne

"Thanks for reminding us how much folks back home care about us. The Easter posters and letters helped brighten up our TOC a lot. Thinking of home makes this place a lot easier to take. Hope to see you all when we get back next year. Keep in touch! "...... a 2-69-AR Soldier

"We received the Easter posters. Wonderful posters and letter! The Soldiers love reading the posters; we have them posted in the TOC. Thanks for putting this effort together. You guys are the greatest. Thanks for your support of Soldiers; it means more than you will ever know" ...... LTC Perry
